Throw Pillow Styling 101: Mixing Colors, Textures & Sizes

Throw pillows are deceptively simple. Thrown together carelessly, they look cluttered. Styled well, they can make a sofa or bed look like it belongs in a magazine. The difference isn't taste — it's a few simple rules.

Mix textures, not just colors. A velvet pillow next to a woven or basket-weave one adds depth, even within a neutral palette. Two pillows in the same fabric read as flat, no matter how nice the color is.

Go odd numbers. Three or five pillows feel more natural than two or four, where the eye instinctively hunts for perfect symmetry and gets restless when it doesn't find it.

Anchor with one repeating color. Pick a shade that shows up on at least two pillows to tie the arrangement together, then let the others bring contrast.

Don't be afraid to mix sizes either — a larger square pillow toward the back with a smaller one in front creates layers that identical pillows never will.
