Choosing the Right Doormat for Your Entryway

A doormat does more work than it gets credit for — it's the first thing guests notice and the last line of defense against tracked-in dirt. Most people grab the first one that fits the space. A few extra minutes of thought goes a long way.

Material matters more than pattern. Coir (natural fiber) doormats are the classic scraper — great at pulling dirt and moisture off shoes before it reaches your floors. Rubber and molded mats hold up better in heavy rain and won't degrade as fast outdoors.

Match the mat to the entrance. A textured, geometric design works well for a modern front door; a simple striped or woven mat suits a more classic entryway. Busy patterns hide dirt better than solid colors — worth considering if your entrance gets a lot of foot traffic.

Size it to the doorway, not just the step. A mat that's too small gets stepped over rather than stepped on. As a rule of thumb, it should be wide enough that both feet land on it comfortably before someone walks inside.
